<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>
Lois Lenski was born <date>14 October 1893</date>, in <geogname>Springfield, Ohio</geogname>, and earned her bachelor's degree in education from <corpname>Ohio State University</corpname> in 1915. She married <persname>Arthur Covey</persname>, a mural <occupation>painter</occupation>, in 1921. Lenski achieved acclaim as both an <occupation>artist</occupation> and <occupation>author</occupation>. In addition to illustrating her own works, she illustrated 57 <subject>children's books</subject> written by other authors. In 1946, she won the <subject>Newbery Medal</subject> for <title render="italic">Strawberry Girl</title>, and in the following year she received the <subject>Child Study Association Award</subject> for <title render="italic">Judy's Journey</title>. In 1962, she received an honorary L.H.D. from the <corpname>University of North Carolina Greensboro</corpname>. Lenski lived in Connecticut until failing health forced her to move permanently to a warmer climate. She died <date>14 September 1974</date> at her home in <geogname>Tarpon Springs, Florida</geogname>.
