<p>
<persname>George B. Tindall</persname> was a native of <geogname>Greenville, South Carolina</geogname>. He graduated from <corpname>Furman University</corpname> in 1942, received his doctoral degree in 1951 from the <corpname>University of North Carolina</corpname>, and taught at <corpname>Eastern Kentucky State College</corpname> and the <corpname>University of Mississippi</corpname> before joining the history faculty at Woman's College (now UNCG) from 1952 to 1954. He published a number of books on the <subject>history of the United States</subject> and the <subject>American South</subject>.

<head>Collection Overview</head>
<p>This manuscript is the final typescript, with hand-written notations and corrections, of Tindall's book entitled <title render="italic">South Carolina Negroes, 1877-1900</title> (University of South Carolina Press, 1952).</p>

<p>Collation is as follows: introductory material: 19 leaves, variously numbered; text: 356 hand-numbered leaves; footnotes: 75 numbered leaves; bibliography: 20 numbered leaves; index: 30 numbered leaves. </p>

<p>One folder of miscellaneous items includes a sample title page and frontispiece; a rejected title page; publishers' ads; a case binding, and a dust jacket for the book.
