American Women's Voluntary Services

The American Women's Voluntary Services (AWVS) was created in January 1940 and provided material aid, assistance, and information to armed forces and civilians during World War II. Volunteers drove ambulances, operated mobile kitchens, administered first aid, watched fires, picked crops, and sold war bonds and stamps, as well as many other services. AWVS workshops turned out more than one million new or reconditioned articles of clothing for servicemen and civilians.
