Death Mask of Charles Duncan McIver

Acquisition: Given by Dr. James W. Patton of U.N.C. Received May 22, 1962.

Description: Made by Wells L. Brewer. A death mask of the founder and 1st president of the school, Dr. Charles Duncan McIver. Made after McIver’s death in such a manner that portrait busts could later be constructed from the mask. The statues on this campus and in Raleigh were made from the mask. Kept unlabeled at Chapel Hill for a number of years, it later returned to the University where it was displayed publicly for the first time Founders Day, October 5, 1962. (UA14.1.070)
