Voicing Observations in Civil Rights and Equality Struggles

About the Project

Partners/Funders

Greensboro VOICES is a collaborative effort of the Greensboro Public Library and The University Libraries of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and is made possible by the sponsorship of the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro.

The Project

Greensboro VOICES contains 125 transcripts of oral history interviews conducted during the late 1970s through early 1990s by the Greensboro Public Library and the UNCG Department of History, as well as a handful conducted between 1997 and 2001 by Jim Schlosser for the Greensboro News and Record. These two collections contain almost 140 interviews documenting the civil rights movement in Guilford County between the early 1950s and the early 1980s.

The Interviews

Many of the individuals interviewed discuss their memories of specific sit-ins, marches, and demonstrations, including the famous February 1, 1960 Woolworth's sit-in. Other prominent topics include school desegregation, disturbances at Dudley High School, activities at North Carolina A&T State University, and the deadly Nazi/Klan and CWP confrontation on November 3, 1979. The activities of local civic, political, and activist organizations include the Greensboro Community Fellowship, Pulpit Forum, Greensboro Citizens Association, Greensboro Men's Club, Human Relations Committee, the school board and city council, Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, and local chapters of the NAACP and Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). The interviews are currently housed in the UNCG University Archives & Manuscripts.
