
Mr. John May and Mr. Selby Bateman, both of Greensboro, were elected co-chairs of the Friends of the UNCG Libraries for 2003-2004 at the organization's annual meeting on April 1. John May graduated from UNCG with a degree in English and is a longtime Friend of Jackson Library. He holds a Masters in Fine Arts degree from Bennington College, and is managing partner of Bonaventure Co., a children's apparel manufacturing firm located in Greensboro Selby Bateman is a senior editor with Pace Communications in Greensboro. He received an M.A. in American history from UNCG in 1975 and is a graduate of the Bryan School of Business's Program for Management Development. He holds a B.A. in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Others elected to the Friends of the Library Board of Directors for three-year terms were Burch Carr, Jan Hensley, Lee Kinard, Lou McMillion, Carolyn Noble, Hephzibah Roskelly and Beth Sheffield, all of Greensboro, and Carole Boston Weatherford of High Point.
The Friends of the UNCG Libraries was founded in 1959 and has supported Jackson Library's growth and development since that time. Last October, Jackson Library was named a Literary Landmark by the Friends of Libraries USA, the first such library in North Carolina to be so designated. In 2001, the Friends were instrumental in supporting the acquisition of the Library's one-millionth volume.
